What am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to go? Who decides the color of the tablecloths (and these flight suits, for that matter)? Where on earth did so many roles and responsibilities come from? Let's explore what you need to know about being a star board member. Learn about legal obligations, societal roles, and what exactly is best for your organization in its current stage of development. Build your confidence and skills by starting with knowing what you don't have to do!
We'll cover:
- Why Boards Exist — It's a charming story (some might say a costume drama)
- What the Law Says — Your three duties, the ones you have to do, scouts honor
- 3 Plus 1 Starring Roles and Responsibilities — What in the "heck" the world wants from you
- Critical Condition or Constituent Compliant (that's a lot of "c"s) — What kind of organization you are leading, different stages of development mean different leadership

There is no law that says you have to raise money, but there is a law that says you have to ensure that the money is there to do the work. So responsibilities include some policy, some oversight, and yes, some fundraising. Learn your role in setting and monitoring the budget, ensuring revenue streams are relevant, enhancing the fundraising process, and modeling giving for volunteers and donors.

The Rising Star: Building the Board — Getting Better Every Time
You've reached the Milky Way and are now looking down on the big blue marble you helped to nurture — it's now time for the next big thing. No, you don't have to be a board member forever. (Having done a good job, you may want to.) New friends, community pride, sense of achievement — these all can be the benefits of board membership. What's your role in bringing new leaders onto your team? How to you mentor the next generation while meeting your obligations today?
