Building Board Stars
A Hands-On Board Retreat & Training Experience with Mickey MacIntyre

Saturday, October 17, 2009
9am-5pm
290 W. 9 Mile Road
Ferndale, MI

Mickey's back! Affirmations is pleased to once again host our own trainer to the stars for this low cost alternative to your annual Board retreat.

We know you have questions, and Mickey has answers...

The economy has pushed Board members to face incredible challenges. You're not alone if you have found yourself asking: Am I doing this right?

Even in better economic times, members of Boards of Directors too often operate without the fundamental knowledge or experience to take the authority and responsibility that's endowed only to us. The uncertainty this creates can lead to organizational disaster at its worst and personal frustration at the least. You will learn to simplify your board experience, build your confidence, and make board service the highlight of your day. Now more than ever, you owe it to yourself and your organization.

Mickey calls this becoming a "Board Star" and by the end the day you and your fellow Board members will be shining brightly!

What does the universe hold for us in this momentous day? Put on your flight suit, and get ready to make realChange together... prepare for take off!

The Right Constellation of Board R&R Stars: That's Roles and Responsibilities (not rest and relaxation)
What am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to go? Who decides the color of the tablecloths (and these flight suits, for that matter)? Where on earth did so many roles and responsibilities come from? Let's explore what you need to know about being a star board member. Learn about legal obligations, societal roles, and what exactly is best for your organization in its current stage of development. Build your confidence and skills by starting with knowing what you don't have to do!

We'll cover:

  • Why Boards Exist — It's a charming story (some might say a costume drama)
  • What the Law Says — Your three duties, the ones you have to do, scouts honor
  • 3 Plus 1 Starring Roles and Responsibilities — What in the "heck" the world wants from you
  • Critical Condition or Constituent Compliant (that's a lot of "c"s) — What kind of organization you are leading, different stages of development mean different leadership

The North Star: Set Policy and Ensure the Public Trust
Your rocket has launched and you now need to build the confidence of your community and donors. Mickey's here to help. Review step-by-step the activities we typically think of when we think of board membership.

We'll cover:

  • Planning for the future
  • Operating within legal compliance
  • Ensuring organizational integrity
  • Oversight of staff and facilities
  • Continuity and effectiveness of Program
  • Approving annual budget
  • Keeping the mission and the brand

The Expanding Star: Resource the Policy You Set
There is no law that says you have to raise money, but there is a law that says you have to ensure that the money is there to do the work. So responsibilities include some policy, some oversight, and yes, some fundraising. Learn your role in setting and monitoring the budget, ensuring revenue streams are relevant, enhancing the fundraising process, and modeling giving for volunteers and donors.

We'll cover:

  • Prevent unfunded mandates
  • Monitor the annual budget
  • Ensure that program fees are set and collected
  • Capitalize fundraising and development programs
  • Model fundraising and giving for volunteers and donors

The Rising Star: Building the Board — Getting Better Every Time
You've reached the Milky Way and are now looking down on the big blue marble you helped to nurture — it's now time for the next big thing. No, you don't have to be a board member forever. (Having done a good job, you may want to.) New friends, community pride, sense of achievement — these all can be the benefits of board membership. What's your role in bringing new leaders onto your team? How to you mentor the next generation while meeting your obligations today?

We'll cover:

  • Identifying potential board members
  • Recruiting board members
  • Mentoring new board members
  • Participating in board accountability and evaluation
  • Ensuring leadership succession

ONE EXTRA STAR: The Shining Star — Be the Ambassador
Being an ambassador transcends every other starring role and responsibility of board membership. So it is an extra star. Never alone but always necessary for the success of the others.

We'll cover:

  • Why Showing Up Isn't Enough — You've got to achieve one of the other three to succeed, we'll tell you why
  • Learning to C.A.R.E. — A system that focuses on them
  • Working a Room... Host or Guest? — How the pros make it seem effortless... at least 20 tips to being a great ambassador
  • You will learn how engaging in these four basic responsibilities creates a leadership track for future members and specifically for your Board of Directors

Now that you have reached the stars, what does Mother Earth look like from way up above?

  • Strong boards throughout the Detroit region
  • Boards with increased skills — to lead, plan and implement change
  • Organizations grabbing control of their future in tough times
  • An expanded network of community leaders creating a new constellation of support networks

Added Bonus for Participants

  • Free analysis of your Board's online self-assessment (we'll take you there...)
  • Online archives of supplemental materials and tools
  • 10% discount off future services provided by realChange Partners
